About Me
People say I need to demonstrate my credentials so that readers know that I have the right background. Well,
I have over 50 years experience with boats, starting when I was just 10 years old. My Dad built a plywood
dinghy (with my considerable help) LOL, then we went on to a converting a ship's lifeboat, boring the stern tube
and installing a gas (petrol) engine from an army truck. We were into bass fishing and traded up to a navy
tender with a Dorman Ricardo diesel.

Then I started racing a GP14 sailing dinghy, and we bought a 5 ton yacht (mahogany on oak). That
was a long restoration project, rebuilding the engine, making a steamer and replacing cracked
planks and ribs, keel bolts, the works.
I even learned to weld, when Dad and I built a trailer for it. Then I put 21 coats of paint on
the hull...

GRP was next, and I part-owned a Pelle Petterson designed Maxi 95 (fin keel). After that I owned a Westerly
Berwick bilge-keeler, then a 40' Jeanneau Sun Fizz lift-keel.
For well over ten years now I have owned a 26 ton steel schooner, and live aboard much of the
time. I do all my own maintenance (there's a lot of it)! Destinations have included Brazil, the Cape Verde Islands,
North Africa, the Mediterranean and many trips to Spain, Portugal and the Azores.
There's still a lot more of the world to see...
Many years ago I taught the Cruising Skipper course as it was called at that time - shore based, and have been a
member of various sailing clubs along the way.
